August 5, 2009, Philippine Special Non-Working Holiday

Former Philippine President Corazon C. Aquino's remains will be laid to rest on Wednesday, August 5, 2009, at the Manila Memorial Park. To give all Filipinos a chance to witness another historic event and pay their last respects to this great woman, MalacaƱang Palace has declared the day as a special non-working holiday.

I was part of the Filipino population whose eyes were glued to the television this noon as President Aquino's remains were transferred from La Salle Greenhills to Manila Cathedral. From ABS-CBN's coverage I have learned that the former President was the only lay person allowed by the Catholic church to be interred at the Manila Cathedral. The crowds that gathered along EDSA and Ayala Avenue today showed that Cory still had the power to unite Filipinos for a common cause. Today was different from them all because the people gathered not for a political cause but to remember this great woman who restored democracy to this nation.
